Three-sport varsity letterman at Central High School – basketball (1973 and 1974), baseball (1972-74) and football (1971-1973). Was first recipient of Lauderdale County Athlete of the Year in 1974 and co-winner of Jack Darby Award in 1974. Was All-County and All-Area performer in basketball, averaging 14.3 points in 31 games during senior season. Averaged 21 points a game during county tournament. Three-year starter at third base for baseball team and selected to East-West All-Star game as a senior. Started two years at quarterback for football team. Started three seasons at shortstop and first base for UNA baseball team where he won Gold Glove Award with .981 fielding percentage in 1978. Team set school record for wins with 24 in 1978. Hit .282 with nine homeruns and 63 RBI during career with Lions. Was an assistant football coach at Colbert County (1978-1985). Indians won area championship in seven of the eight seasons and had 84-14-1 record. Was graduate assistant at University of Alabama in 1986. Assistant coach – offensive line in 1988 and defensive coordinator (1989-91) – at UNA. Defense ranked nationally in five categories during his time as coordinator. Team made playoffs in 1990. Recruited five Division II All-Americans and three UNA Hall of Fame members. Was head football coach at Central (1994-2005 and posted 61-63 record. Longest tenure for head football coach at Central and holds school record for wins. Teams were county champions in 1996 and 1997. Carried four teams to state playoffs.
