He used an career at Central High School to pave the way to college and even into the semi-pro basketball ranks. He averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior at Central, and followed that by averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds per game as a senior in 1971-72. That earned him a spot on the Calhoun Community College team, where he averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds as a freshman and had another solid season as a sophomore. He made the All-Conference first team and led the team in several categories. He then went on to Jacksonville State and put together two solid years of averageing 17 points and 12 rebounds per game. He was selected to the All-Gulf South Conference and All-District teams. He was the team's leading scorer and rebounder as a senior. He was voted as one of the best 100 athletes in JSU history.
