Three-year letterman in football and four-year letterman in baseball at Central High School, graduating in 1985. He had 65 tackles, and eight interceptions on defense during his career. He also rushed for 3,818 yards and had 35 catches on offense, while scoring 38 touchdowns, and was also chosen All-Area and All-County. In baseball, he had a .401 career batting average, with 33 home runs and 41 stolen bases. He also had 93 strikeouts, while earning All-Area and All-County status. He played in the state baseball All-Star game in Birmingham as a senior. He signed with the University of North Alabama where he started three seasons at defensive back. He was a First Team A11¬GSC selection and voted to the Lions All-Decade team. He was chosen Second Team All-American ill 1989. He finished with 135 career tackles, 64 assisted tackles, seven interceptions. and four blocked kicks.
